One fine day

“Control plus S and done!” I exclaimed. It was late in the night I had just completed the report of the Annual General Meeting. Four hours before the sun rises again I need some sleep, I thought. It has been a long day and I have been at the screen for too long. I turned off the laptop, switched off the headlamp, kept my laptop aside and dozed off. My bed was a much-needed comfort for my aching back. The alarm went off at five fifty in the morning and I snoozed it for another ten minutes and rolled over to the other side of the bed. It was six and I had to wake up now. I opened my eyes but the room was too dark for six am. I turned on the table lamp but the darkness prevailed. I started rubbing my eyes anxiously, I jumped off the bed and turned on the room’s light and my worst fear had come true. I had lost my eyesight. I thought why me? Why it had to happen today? How can I go blind out of nowhere? Myriad thoughts ran through my mind. I can’t keep sitting here in the middle of

The Beautiful Voice

It was late in the afternoon I was taking stock of the monthly bills. I came across a particular bill and found out that it was mixed up with someone else’s. They have built a habit of mixing up the bills. Now I will have to call the customer care. I took the phone and called up. “You have called up ABC customer care service please press one for....” The monotonic voice boomed. After series of different button presses here I was waiting to connect with their representative. “Hello, good afternoon welcome to ABC services, How may I help you?” the sales representative asked. She has a beautiful voice just the one needed to calm down an infuriated customer, I thought . “I am Jay the monthly bill that I received was someone else ’s. Please send me new copy of the bill. This has happened twice in a row now.” I said. “Sure sir I will look into the matter please hold the line”. She said. Wow! she has an impressive voice with serenity oozing out of it, I thought. “I have pinned down the

This is'nt a drill

“Save your work, shut down your PCs switch off the fans and lights and follow the instructions carefully”. The fire safety instructor blared in a monotonous voice. It was our customary safety mock drill and as a valuable employee to the organisation every one had to participate. Off went the alarms and the instructors took the centre stage and paraded us through the entire office. Suddenly I heard a loud scream, “Hey did you hear that scream, something ain’t right”. I said to Rohan. “Yeah let’s check it up,” said Rohan. We came out of the procession. “I think it came from the fifth floor”. I said. We scurried through the stairs and opened the door. “It's empty, there is no one here,” Rohan said. We heard the scream again. “Sixth floor its Keerthi's department,” I said. We scampered to the sixth floor and broke open the door. The sixth floor was filled with smoke and fire was engulfing the entire space. "Rohan, I will take the fire extinguisher you go turn on the spri

Life, Universe and Everything

One fine day I woke up snugly wrapped in my blanket it was a crisp winter morning, the skyline was left illuminated by the predawn light. The chirping of birds echoed through the silence. I could see a strange white light emanating from the distant woods. I went closer and wiped the mist-laden window and the sight of it left me bewildered. I decided to find the source of this strange light. I started walking towards the woods, the weather was bone chilling. With each step, my curiosity was ever increasing. The woods were engulfed by the morning fog and I could barely see anything beyond twenty feet. White light was distinctly visible in the dense fog. I kept walking towards the light and it seemed to get brighter with every step. My heart was beating faster than usual, I was taking strides longer than usual and then suddenly I started running. I closed my eyes as the halo was too bright. The moment was magical my eyes were closed yet I could feel the aura. Slowly as I opened my ey

Now is a great time

Coming down the Alpine hills the river gushes past the golden ferns and the tall pine trees. Bickering past the small sleepy villages, the river slows down near the Kuntal village creating a perfect spot for fishing. It’s a bright sunny day and Rama, Shyama, and Lakshmana, have gone out fishing as it’s the first day of their vacation. Bass leaps out of the sparkling water shattering the surface  and quickly dives in, but Shyama is not going to let it sneak away easily, he throws in the bait, the fish is caught in the bait, and is trying to break free, Shyama pulls the fishing rod with all his might but the fish is a fighter strong from battling the currents. Tug of war goes on, but the fish wades through the current and sneaks away.  "You have let another fish sneak away, Shyama," said Rama. "Hey, that's not my fault, the fish was just too big..." shrugged Shyama. "You are a wimp Shyama, can't hold on to a fish," Rama said in jest.
